Trouble in Ferenze

Caelin's Journal

I wonder why I continue to put my thoughts on paper. I just burn the pages anyway. Too many secrets…too many secrets within secrets. Lies within lies. I grow tired of this “reality” of my life. I guess that’s why I put my thoughts down here, not as a record to look back on, but it is the only way to keep perspective on what is real.
Anyways.. We tracked the hooded figure that picked up the sleeping poison outside of Bawb’s warehouse. We tracked him to the Musso estate. Boy did I have egg on my face. I knew “Uncle” wouldn’t be involved but who could it be? I managed to convince the group the Duke sent me with to investigate on my own while they wait outside. That sure did take some convincing as they really don’t trust me at all. Heck, I don’t blame them. The Northerner, Flynn, is an odd sort but a decent chap. The Cleric of that cursed religion (The ink here runs where it was hit by spittle), is not a bad fellow either even though he is part of the church. Oh I dream of the day when they fall from grace and their hold on this city is broken. The bard though…he is not to be trusted. He wants “Uncle” dead. And probably me too. I will have to be very careful of that one.
But I digress. I entered the Musso estate and asked the guards who had just entered. They told me it was Giuseppe. Curses! “Uncle” will not be happy that his son is involved in this. And the others outside know the family is involved. I quickly spoke with “Uncle” and he told me that if indeed Giuseppe is involved, he will be punished. He allowed me to invite the other’s in my group to enter the estate and investigate. Bad idea as when we confronted Giuseppe he went wild and became violent. “Uncle” became so enraged that he stabbed him in the neck with a dagger. His only son… I saw regret in his eyes afterwards. But what was done was done. One bad timber could bring the entire house down. I guess it had to be done. At least now the Duke should not come down on us. Although we learned nothing useful from the incident. Who is behind all of this is still a mystery.
We took the corpse to the lower wards, to a temple where the northerner has friends. The priest cast speak with the dead on Giuseppe and asks a few questions. We found out pretty much what we already knew. The Shark and Deacon Carlo were involved.
Speaking of Deacon Carlo…That piece of shit bastard is dead. Poisoned. … What? Come on journal. You really think I am going to write down the name of the poisoner here? No. I won’t write down the name. I don’t care even if I burn you. I told you, secrets within secrets. Lies within lies. You should know better by now journal. But, the amusing thing is that they pinned it on the cleric in my group. Ha! I would have loved to watch him hang for it if I didn’t know him from any of the other clerics of that cursed religion (more spittle makes the ink run). But he is a good person and he has saved my behind in battle. So I couldn’t let him take the fall, especially when I knew he was innocent. I pled before the Duke on his behalf that Deacon Carlo must have committed suicide when he found out that he had been discovered. They didn’t buy the idea entirely, but it created enough doubt in their minds that they allowed the cleric to prove his innocence with a dual to first blood. He accepted the challenge and won. Case closed. I guess all’s well that ends well.

After the issue with the Deacon’s murder…err I mean “suicide”, was taken care of, we could go back to tracking down leads.
We ended up finding the diplomat tied up in one of the Shark’s prisons. We quickly freed her and brought her to the Duke.
Now to confront the Shark… We entered the gladiator games to see if we could get close. The cleric fought well as the rest of us worked the crowd trying to get more information. The Shark was there and he was with an air genasi…how odd. I still have no idea why that mirror called me “The prince of the air genasi”. I’ve never even met an air genasi.
Anyway, I found the fire genasi in the crowds that we saved during the street attack at night in the under ward. Apparently, they had one of their own fighting as well.
The bard was able to turn himself invisible and get close to the Shark and the air genasi. Overheard them conspiring about taking over the entire city. Curses! Things just go from bad to worse in this whole deal. Oh, and the Shark took credit for killing Deacon Carlo! Ha! What a crock of shit. Oh well, it’s probably for the best that everyone believes that is the case.
Things seemed to be looking up. The cleric was winning fights, we made contact with the fire genasi, and the Shark was right in our sights. Then the trap was sprung…by the shark! The hall emptied and we were attacked as the Shark and the air genasi fled. Bastards! We tore through his men and finally made our way out.
We came to a portal room with one of the pedestals that are activated by the crystal shard. It looks like it leads to somewhere in the north. Oh boy…I have a bad feeling about where we are about to go.
Alright. My head is a little more clear now. Time to put you in the fire.

Note to Dominic

May Sol Invictus’s light and power forever strengthen and guide you.

I send you this urgent note as I fear I will not be able to show my head around the church until the evilness that is Carlo has been removed. When we met earlier today, I did not have a chance to tell you everything that had occurred. So here is my recollection as Sol Invictus has shown fit to have this warrior of light remember it.
As you know, the small group that was put together by the Duke – the very talented bard – Octavio, the enigmatic …..I don’t even know what to call him …. Recently freed from his mask of servitude – Flynn, and the representative of house Musso – Cailin (more on him in a bit) – we have seen much, learned much and fought much. Sol Invictus has seen fit to provide us all with his strength of muscle, and of will through it all.
We learned that the alchemist Bawb has been preparing this magical potion that knocks individuals unconscious. While he worked for the Shark, it seems he was under some form of geas put there by whom – we don’t know. It certainly could be Carlo, but it is still unclear. From his lab in an abandoned warehouse, we explored some very old tunnels underground. They showed signs as being used by the early followers of Sol Invictus himself! I believe they were used when the faithful were driven underground during the great battles between ‘he who shall remain nameless’ and Sol himself! Beautiful murals are still visible in the tunnels. The church must restore these as the priceless artifacts they are!
But I digress….. into these tunnels we went, currently home to various low level heathen gangs. No honor among them and we chased a few off after killing one (Sol Invictus will now take care of him). The way was treacherous and it was lucky we had Cailin as he seems to have skills more associated with a common ruffian than with a member of house Musso. Granted he needs A LOT of training as I was caught in a trap that he set off and I believe he accidentally set off at least one other. And his lack of burglary skill are not the most worrisome part – we encountered a spirit captured in a mirror who seemed to possess some ability for scrying. And this spirit referred to Cailin as the Air Genasi prince. Something he vehemently denies. Actually much too vehemently. But he is pretty useful with a scimitar and obviously Sol Invictus has blessed him with that skill. But he does seem to have an odd ‘connection’ with Flynn’s baboon. I am not sure what to make of that.
But the mirror did provide information about Lenara! So we followed the trail and came across a vile succubus! Thank Sol I was ready with a blindness spell! After that, it wasn’t much to send her to her much needed fate. There is one less demon to deal with!
And then we found the sweet and lovely Lenara, who thankfully was safe. I have sent her into hiding for her protection. And we found Caleb – who had been dominated by non other than Carlo himself. What challenge has Sol Invictus put before us? To combat one of our own! While you and I have not always seen eye to eye with Carlo, surely he is controlled by some greater evil? Sol Invictus would not allow someone of his standing in the church to fall to temptation? I must pray on this tonight as it weighs heavily on my mind. Along with Lenara were two dozen other kidnapped people – some of them children! We rescued them all and while returning them home, was when the miracle occurred. It seems Sol Invictus believed that Flynn had repented enough, done enough good to wash away his (obviously significant) sins and freed him from the bondage of his horrible mask. It simply fell away and we are now blessed by the beautiful face of the now reborn Flynn (who has many talents in combat).
And now on to the part you are totally unaware of my liege.
We snuck into Carlo’ tower (thanks to the wiles of Octavio) and within his study found many incriminating things! There was a trapped chest that Cailin managed to again, not successfully remove. Poor Flynn was almost incinerated! But we did find a tome of evil – identifying the process for immortality! We took the tome along with some other items and are pursuing the path that Sol Invictus has shown us.
I fear I will not be able to communicate much as I am sure Carlo’s guards know I was in the group that entered his tower. Pray he does not connect me back to you.
May Sol Invictus save us all.
Your servant

(Flynn would not keep a journal. This would be more of a conversation he would hold with Shovelle.)

SHOEVELLE: “How have you been, my brother?”

FLYNN: (long silence) “… awkward. The Duke has sent me on a quest with great reward. He has stationed me with two teammates: Cailin – a noble from the House of Musso, and Tarsis – a cleric of Sol Invictus.”

SHOEVELLE: “The Musso House has been most loyal to the Duke.”

FLYNN: “That may be so. But Cailin draws concern. He checks in with criminals moreso than with members of his own house. Also there is a performer, by the name of Ooctavio. Who’s songs are very inspirational. But how has he made a living? And what are his loyalties to the Duke or the House of Musso?”

SHOEVELLE: “Do not judge.”

FLYNN: “Yes. My own history could never be explained.”

SHOEVELLE: “… and Tarsis?”

FLYNN: “Tarsis is a devoted follower of Sol Invectus. Our first visit on this quest was to the inn in the northern district of Frenze, The Golden Duck. Both Cailin and Ooctavio were well received. We examined the room where Modig was taken. Dr. Cornwallis and I-”

SHOEVELLE: “How is your baboon?”

FLYNN: “Dr. Cornwallis is fine. Controlled. Domestic. He has never shown signs of envy or jealousy. I find it strange that others believe he may be a sign of the apocalypse. Both Dr. Cornwallis and I found evidence of demon summoning. The room was a mural of blood. Evidence of someone being dragged away, a hand print and a large boot print lead us to believe the abductors have the following characteristics: 1) someone is a summoner 2) someone has access to alchemy 3)there is more than one 4) they are skilled, the lock was picked 5)and they are somehow related to the string of kidnappings. Which brought us here. We saved a young woman from a horrible fate of violence … Tarsis and I did not hesitate to save her…. whereas, and forgive my judgment, Cailin and Ooctavio were practically dragged to aid her. What noble connects with the underworld but does not help the down trodden? During the time, we discovered that Tarsis used to fight in the Gladitorial games. I remember my guards mentioning his name. Supposedly, he was a brutal opponent in the games. Eventually we came across and abduction. They were abducting (takes a moment to look around) a fire gensai. Who claimed that gensai are being targeted. And claimed that the Air Court is attempting to take over, so that the Air King may gain immortality. How does it all tie in, sir? The missing Princess of the Northern tribe – who is not part of any court, and the Air King attempting to take control through kidnappings. We were told, that it’s possible the Princess’ kidnapping is an attempt to start a war with the king. Back in my prime, I would take droves of the king’s army. I would drown them in large demonic beasts and pox divisions of his men with hexes and curses. Through my redemption (he pauses) and your teaches … I must pity him. Tonight we head to the warehouse. We will try to make contact with Bawb the Alchemist. Alchemist to the Shark. Bawb may have his own quest for power. It seems like men … the mortal lives of men … are tied into gaining power. You do not live, until your life means more than someone else’s-”

SHOVELLE: “Brother, you are vexed. Emotions weigh heavy on you. Take some of my prayer beads and be serene at the base of the Revelator.”

FLYNN: “I will my, friend.”

(Flynn takes the beads and walks towards a small alter. He stands fifteen feet away from the alter and stops.)

SHOVELLE: “What is the matter, my brother?”

FLYNN: “The great one will not let me get any closer … and my current master … makes me ill.”

SHOVELLE: “Here then (hands him a broom) sweep the grounds. Hopefully the Revelator will see your good service…”

(Flynn sweeps.)
